What is brand identity?

👉 When you see an apple with a bite taken out of one side, which brand do you think of?

👉 A black horse is cantering across the beach, which bank do you think of?

👉 You hear a ‘every little helps’ and you immediately think of which supermarket?

That is brand identity.

Your brand identity is a collection of brand name, logo and design, its style and tone of voice, the look and feel of the products, the way a service is consistently delivered along with your mission and values. All of this combined helps to portray the right image to your customers.  

A brand identity is different to brand image, which is the customers perception of the brand based on interactions and memories associated with the brand in the customers mind.

Why is it important?

If you are starting a new business or launching a new product or service, then starting with a brand name and tag line is clearly very important. The brand name needs to be memorable, relevant to the industry you are in and relatable to your customers. The tag line is used to tell people what it is that you do or what they can expect from using your product or service.

Conveying your values through your brand is really important to engage customers and maintain your relationship with them, this also helps your customers during their buying decision making process and longer-term commitment to your brand.

A strong brand identity also has the ability for a quick presentation of the company to its target client – what it does, how it solves the problem, who for and how it is different from its competitors.

Your brand identity needs to support the overall business goals and message.

How to tell people about it

The most important thing is to be consistent, use your mission in all of your key messaging such as website introduction, social media bios, direct emails, advertisements and when you introduce who you are and what you do to others. Think dinner table conversation – how easy is it to tell someone what your business does in a clear and succinct way?

Ensure your brand colours and type face are the same and used across all of your marketing materials. This creates instant recognition and your brand becomes memorable to your clients.
