Exhibitions and trade shows are prime opportunities for businesses to showcase their products and services, meet potential clients, and build valuable connections. However, with the hustle and bustle of these events, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. To stand out and make a lasting impact, you need to attract and engage visitors at your exhibition stand. Here’s how to do it effectively:

Creating Buzz Before the Show

Your exhibition strategy should start long before the event begins. By leveraging a robust pre-event marketing campaign, you can build excitement and anticipation, ensuring visitors will make a beeline to your stand. These are three ways that you can do that:

  1. Email Marketing – utilise your database list with a teaser of what’s to come. Highlight any launches, special offers, or cool giveaways that will take place at your stand.
  2. Social Media Campaigns – Use your social channels to create awareness about your participation. Engage your audience with countdowns, sneak peeks, or contests that require them to visit your stand to claim prizes.
  3. Partnerships & Collaborations – Collaborate with influencers, other exhibitors, speakers or industry leaders attending the event. If they’re excited about visiting your stand their audience will be too.

Marketing Tip – Use event hashtags and geolocation tags on social platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter to enhance your visibility among event attendees.

Make Your Stand Unmissable

Your exhibition stand is your storefront during the event. To attract foot traffic, it needs to be visually compelling and engaging.

Ensure your company’s branding is clear and prominent from every angle, so that it is easy to see. Use bold colours, eye-catching graphics, and large signage that communicates your value proposition in seconds. People are naturally drawn to things they can interact with, whether touch screens, product demos, VR experiences, games, quizzes or music creating opportunities for hands-on interaction. Make your stand inviting to visitors, provide comfortable seating areas where visitors can relax or charge their phones and offer them a coffee or some bottled water — anything to make your stand a desirable pit stop.

Marketing Tip – Use lighting strategically to highlight key areas of your stand, making it a focal point on the exhibition floor.

Use Your Best Asset on The Ground

The success of your stand doesn’t just depend on the physical setup it’s equally about the people who represent your brand. Your staff should be well-trained, approachable, and armed with the knowledge visitors may need. Please bear in mind that not everyone finds being on a stand the most comfortable place. Choose people who enjoy chatting and who are happy to encourage people to interact.

Make sure your staff is proactive but not overly aggressive. They should be approachable, with open body language and smiles that encourage visitors to stop by. It is OK for them not to have all the answers, your best asset might not be the most clued up about everything – that is fine – your goal could be to create awareness of your brand and get names and email addresses to build your database and contact them after the show. If someone doesn’t have the answers to the questions asked, empower them to say “I don’t know the answer to that but let me take your details and I will put you in touch with our xx team who will answer your question.”

One thing that would help staff is to teach them some soft selling techniques such as asking open-ended questions or offering helpful insights that can lead to meaningful conversations instead of a hard sales pitch.

Marketing Tip  – Brief your team daily on key talking points and goals for the event. Ensure they have an elevator pitch ready and can introduce your brand quickly and effectively.

Create Memorable Moments For Your Visitors

An engaging exhibition stand is all about offering something more than just promotional flyers and business cards. You need to provide a memorable experience that keeps your visitors engaged and talking about your stand long after they leave.

Here are a few ideas that we have used:

– Live Demonstrations: If you have a product or service that can be showcased live, do so! Seeing your offering in action will create a lasting impression.

– Gamification: Incorporate fun, competitive elements like quizzes, contests, or games with prizes. Gamification not only grabs attention but also provides a great conversation starter.

– Photo Opportunities: Create a corner in your booth where visitors can take photos. Use branded backdrops and provide hashtags so attendees can share their experiences with their social networks. Hats, crazy glasses and feather bowers work a treat!!

– Fun Giveaways:  Think outside of the box, something that fits your brand and is a bit different to the usual pen or water bottle. Many brands are sustainable aware so consider something that fits with re-using. In the past, we have given away a brightly coloured potted flower in a fun-coloured pot with our branding on. It was a focal point, a talking point and got encouraged people to seek us out to get their own!

Marketing Tip – Offer exclusive giveaways or prizes that attendees can only claim at your stand. This will give them a reason to stop by and stay.

Follow Up After The Show

The exhibition may be over, but your marketing efforts shouldn’t stop there. The real value of a trade show is in the leads you generate and how you nurture them post-event. It is essential to follow up with people who stopped by your stand.  Send a personalised email to all the contacts you made at the show, thanking them for visiting your stand, you could also include any relevant resources, such as brochures or case studies.

Remember that not all visitors are the same. Prioritise your leads based on interest levels and follow up with tailored messages, whether it’s scheduling a call with them or sending more information.

Keep the conversation going by engaging on social media with the visitors who tagged your brand during the event. You can also follow them from your social media accounts and connect with them on LinkedIn.  This builds rapport and keeps your brand top-of-mind.

Marketing Tip – Use a CRM system to track all the leads generated at the show and set reminders for follow-ups.

Measure And Analyse Post-Show

To refine your strategy for future exhibitions, it’s crucial to measure your performance at each event. Evaluate which tactics worked, which didn’t, and how you can improve for next time.

Marketing Tip – Post-event debriefs with your team can uncover valuable insights and help you improve for the next event.
