The importance of planning an effective social media strategy for 2021

Social Media Strategy

This year has changed the digital landscape forever. We saw a rapid shift from office life to remote working, with more and more business owners realising that they need to have a social media presence for their business to stay relevant.

With more than half of the global population now on social media, it’s extremely vital for businesses to ensure that they have an effective social media strategy going into 2021. A new year brings fresh new opportunities for businesses and a comprehensive social media implementation plan is bound to put you ahead of your competitors.

Consider the three types of media

With social media constantly evolving, the possibilities are endless. It’s uncommon for marketers to rely on just one social media channel and this is why you need to consider all three types of media when planning your strategy. Your social media strategy can fall into three key types – paid, owned and earned media. It’s important to get your social media strategy correct and ensure that your purpose and goals are aligned across all tactics and platforms.

Know your target audience

Before you even begin executing your marketing plan, you need to have insightful market research to inform your strategy. Before figuring out your tone of voice, you need to know exactly who you are targeting. Find out their interests, values and receptive content types. You want to entice your audience, to naturally draw them in and get them to engage with the content that you create and share, so it’s fundamental to build pen portraits first.

It’s all about consistency

Consistency may be our favourite word because the truth is, it’s the most important factor. Consistency is key! You need to be consistent in your messaging, delivery, tone of voice, aesthetic and posting schedule. If you’re starting to build your social media presence, you have to start somewhere and for your audience to recognise your brand, you must be consistent. Being consistent in your brand allows you to grow in audience engagement and reach. Consistent posting will allow your business to outsmart the algorithm and become more present on people’s feeds.

Always look out for new advancements and trends

If there’s one thing for sure, it’s that social media will always continue to advance and innovate. This year, we have seen the landscape become shaped by so many new trends. From reels igniting organic Instagram exposure, to retailers embracing the shift of online shopping on Instagram and Facebook, a lot can happen in a year and so it’s super important to remain up to date with social media advancements and news relative to your industry. If you are aware of these developments before your competitors, you will remain ahead of the curve.
